My Top 5 Beauty Essentials

Ever since I was young, I have been applying a daily facial moisturizer night & day. I remember walking into my local Walgreens and deciding on an oil-free SPF option from Neutrogena, and only recently did I branch out {seriously – I exclusively used Neutrogena for over 10 years!} I love Neutrogena because its affordable and easy to obtain – you can find any of their products at Walgreens, CVS, Duane Reade etc., as well as any grocery store. Only recently, after some research, have I branched out and tried a few new favorites: Peter Thomas Roth ‘Water Drench’ moisturizer & the Charlotte Tilbury ‘Magic’ Cream are two that I rotate into my daily skincare routine now. The water drench moisturizer is so different from any other moisturizer that I have ever tried! It’s hard to explain, but the texture is almost slippery, but still very light. I almost feel like I’m putting a really thin, hydrating mask on my face every time I use it. I love how easily it glides over my face, neck and chest and a little goes a LONG way! As for Charlotte Tilbury’s magic cream, I would describe this one as luxe. It feels so silky and smooth and creamy, but still goes on light {I hate a heavy cream}. Overall, it’s heavenly, and truly feels like a treat for my face.

Serum
I bought my first serum almost a year ago when I was looking to hydrate my skin during a harsh winter. I chose the ‘Midnight Recovey Concentrate’ from Kiehl’s because I have always respected Kiehl’s products, and the price point wasn’t crazy expensive. I purchased the 1oz jar for $46 and with daily usage, I am still on the same bottle! I love this serum because it is light, but hydrating, and doesn’t make my skin feel oily. You can serum underneath your nighttime moistureizer or wear it on it’s own! Other serums I have tried in the last year with varying success are Vitner’s Daughter, La Mer, and I just ordered the SkinCeuticals CE Ferulic serum which I’ve heard is amazing {so excited to try this one!} As far as Vitner’s Daughter goes, I must admit I was slightly disappointed. It is by far the most expensive beauty product I have ever purchase and the least likable. Its super thick, and has a very powerful fragrance. I didn’t wake up with my skin feeling or looking any different after my first usage, nor after a week of usage, so overall I wouldn’t buy this product again. The La Mer serum was included in a beauty set I bought during the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale, and was a nice surprise! It feels very light {like putting water on your face} and isn’t oily at all. I happily apply this every few nights {I like to switch up my routine} but will most likely not re-buy – the .5 oz jar is $130, whereas the Kiehl’s is $46 for 1oz!

Wet Brush
My mom introduced me to the wet brush a few years back and I haven’t looked back since. I honestly don’t know how I went my entire life without using one! If you don’t know, the Wet Brush not only detangles your hair with such ease, but also massages your head as you do so. It’s soft, but sturdy bristles make brushing your hair so much more enjoyable! And at $9 a pop, you can buy a few {I also have a travel sized one!}

Eyebrow Pencil
This beauty item has only become a must have in the last year or so {blame it on Cara Delevingne for making thick bushy brows stylish!} but ever since I filled in my brows for the first time, I can’t go a day without! I love Tom Ford’s ‘Brow Sculptor’ pencil because it has a brush, a sharpener, and a pencil that lasts 4x longer than the average option from any other brand. Admittedly, you will pay more for this pencil, but after trying several options, I always come back to this one. It’s a bit waxy, and a bit tricky to apply {the pencil is a bit thicker than some other options}, but it’s long lasting stay power and color options make it by far the best in my book.

Mascara
Last but not least, mascara. I’ve never been someone who wears a lot of makeup, but one makeup product I have never been able to live without is mascara. I just don’t feel like I look awake without it! Even if I’m not wearing an ounce of other make up, but my lashes look long and beautiful, I feel so much more put together. From $5 drug store options, to $85 mascaras from Neimans {was totally conned into that one}, I have tried every single option under the sun. For a while my favorite was the Giorgio Armani ‘Eyes to Kill’ mascara, but after a while, I got tired of spending so much money on something that was running out every month. Instead, I started investing in RevitaLash’s eyelash serum {*see side note below!*} and now save money by buying the L’Oréal Paris Voluminous Million Lashes Mascara which, honestly, I love! I think it does just as good of a job as the Armani option, and it’s obviously much less expensive.

** As you now know, long lashes are something I’ve never been able to live without, and up until recently, I was suffering with short, stubby lashes. That is, until a friend recommended RevitaLash. My friend Louisa has *the most* long and beautiful lashes that I had ever seen – you know, the kind you get distracted by when talking – and it turns out she was religious about using RevitaLash. I immediately ordered this product and haven’t looked back since. My short stubby lashes are now so incredibly long, and only need 1 swipe of my L’Oreal mascara to look perfect. I now get asked about my lashes all the time, and feel like I can walk around with nothing on my face with confidence! *Pro tip: buy the .11 oz version, it will last you 5x longer than the .3 oz option – I opened my .11 oz tube back in March and am still working on using it all up! The .3 oz tube is $55, and will last you ~1 month. Also, you must use this product consistently for 3 weeks {I put one swipe on each eyelash base every night before bed} before seeing a difference in the length of your lashes.

I would love to hear about your favorite beauty must-haves! Let me know in the comments!

The Tiniest Bag That Fits Everything

Jeans: Frame forever Flare ‘Karlie’ Jeans {shorter version here!} // Top: Halogen Ruffle Sleeve Tee {similar here & here} // Bag: Gucci Mini Marmont Bag c/o // Sunglasses: Le Spec hypnotize // Shoes: Schutz Enida Heels

When I first saw this little Gucci Marmont bag online, I gotta admit, I was a bit skeptical. I obviously knew I would love the bag because of the elegant design, but I sort of assumed it would be an accessory that just looked good – I didn’t think it would actually be functional. It looked TINY! But when it finally came in the mail a few days later, I was shocked {& thrilled!} to see that it was better than I could have ever imagined. Not only was the soft leather & design gorgeous, but it fit my phone, keys, wallet, lipstick and sunglasses without issue {?!}  The best part though, is that this bag doesn’t carry the typical Gucci price tag – it will still set you back a few hundred dollars, but this is much less than the typical $2-$3K price tags of most of their bags. I have loved it so much I am considering buying the blush version! #swoon

I have paired it here with my go-to flare jeans from Frame and this cute under $50 ruffle sleeve top. Don’t forget I’m 5’10 without heels, so I had to find an extra long inseam to achieve this look {the exact jeans I’m wearing are here!} But, because I know most people aren’t so tall, you can easily get the look with a shorter inseam. My favorite, shorter-girl, flares are these.

Lastly, Hurricane Harvey is still wreaking havoc on Southern Texas, and especially Houston, and there are so many ways to donate. See a few of my favorites below!

  • Blood is always needed in natural disasters, and if you are someone who cannot donate in a monetary way, donating blood is a free way & easy way to give back. You can find your local blood drives here!
  • The Red Cross has created a ‘wish list’ on Amazon, allowing you to easily check out & send much needed supplies to their resource points in Houston. A great option for those who don’t live in Texas and/or have access to local drives providing support.
  • Text HARVEY to 90999 to donate $10 to the Red Cross
  • Text LOVE to 20222 to donate $10 to the Humane Society

Where to Find The Best Faux Florals Online & in Dallas

Well, it’s official. I think I killed my fiddle leaf fig. Wait, hold on. What? Say it ain’t so! Let’s back up, and I’ll fill you in from the beginning.

I stupidly bought her from Ruibal’s in Dallas right before I left for Europe, and then left her in a corner of my room where my husband proceeded to forget about watering her? By the time I got home, Oddette {as I have playfully named her} was looking a little worse for wear, but nothing a little water and care couldn’t fix. Or so I thought. After another few weeks of consistent watering, I realized Oddette probably needed a place in the home with better indirect light, so I moved her closer to the window. After little improvement, I asked around and several people told me I should put her in my backyard for a few hours so she could soak up some direct sunlight. Well. That was the *worst* thing I could have done! After a few hours in the sun, Oddette was done for – her leaves were curled up and brown, dried to a crisp. After visiting Ruibals this past weekend, and speaking to a professional, he let me know that moving a fiddle leaf fig {even a foot!} will send it into a shock and it will stop growing for 2 weeks. Needless to say, I gave Oddette the shock of her life, and in the days since her incineration, all of her sad little leaves have fallen off.

On another note, I have two beautiful {giant} jars on my kitchen counter {see photo above} that I have been filling with flowers 1x a week since being home.  Now, even though I wasn’t killing these flowers, it was still a high maintenance task, and extremely expensive! I was spending $60-$70 a week on flowers that would die within 7 days and it was just getting to be too much. My experience with Oddette, and the expense of filling the blue jars led me again in search of a better option.

With all of this being said, you probably know why I started the search for a faux floral solution. I had been introduced to faux florals a year earlier when I was gifted a beautiful arrangement from Neiman Marcus. It has proudly sat on my breakfast table since, and I am still in love with how good it looks all the time. No water, no drooping flowers, no tiny bugs, or pollen that will stain – nothing! Beauty without consequence! On a whim, I decided to reach out to y’all for advice on where I could find the best faux florals & plants and the recommendations came POURING in. They were good – I mean, really, really good, and I just felt like I needed to share all that goodness! I don’t have a personal experience with all of these {more like the opposite!} but I have tried out 1 or 2 with great success. And I’m sure this goes without saying, but I think it’s pretty clear from the above that I’m not meant to take care of fickle house plants. Give me a cactus, and I’m a champ. An indestructible succulent? I’m game. But a fiddle leaf fig? I may be done. I think we have come a long way since the 80s when faux florals were tacky, discolored and extremely fake looking. Thank goodness there are so many incredible options now!

Feel free to check out the links below and let me know if the comments if you have any favorites that I may have missed! Always love hearing from y’all!

Apples to Zinnias {@applestozinnias} – Apart from the orchid arrangement I was gifted from Neiman Marcus, I didn’t have any large faux florals. That was until this past week, when I walked into Apples to Zinnias with my two giant blue jars {see main photo above} and designed an arrangement I knew I would love looking at for weeks at a time! I’m in love with how these magnolia leaf + hydrangea arrangements turned out, and for $200 a pop, I will save tons of money in the long run. The best part about these ‘arrangements’ is that they can be easily removed should I decided to put real flowers in them for a week or two, so theres no pressure! I’m already designing my christmas arrangements in my head….

Botanica Unlimited

Dallas Design Center – unspecified

Diane James Home {@diane_james_home} lovvvvve this one!

Dr. Delphinium {@drdelphiniumdesigns} – Dr. Delphinium is one of the premier florists in Dallas, offering some of the most beautiful {fresh!} floral arrangements that I’ve ever seen. But to be honest, it was news to me that they offered faux arrangements, so I don’t know what to expect in that department. The only catch is that Dr. Delphinium tends to be much more expensive than other florists in the city, so I’m sure their faux flowers would be the same.

Eldorado Furniture

Lakewood Succulent Design {@lakewoodsucculentdesign}

LDF Silk {@ldfsilk} – I have visited this showroom in the Design District and was just blown away. The plants and floral arrangements are creative and just stunning. With that being said, I had never thought to ask if they offer their services to individuals – it seemed to me that they cater more to the retail,/hotels/businesses, etc., but apparantly I am wrong! A sweet reader of mine informed me that they will custom create anything {of any size} for anyone! Amazing!

NDI {Natural Decorations Incorporated} – {@ndi_flowers}

Neiman Marcus – As I mentioned above, I was gifted the most incredible orchid arrangement from Neiman Marcus. It was the first time I was introduced to faux florals that actually looked real – my husband even tried to water them once – & I was hooked. I would buy every arrangement they offered if they weren’t so pricey! Will have to save my pennies 🙂

Nicholson Hardie

One Kings Lane {The French Bee} – My true first foray into faux florals were several years ago when I ordered two inexpensive arrangements online from One Kings Lane. I bought one white hydrangea mix, and one simple pink peony. I still have both displayed in my home to this day in bathrooms around the house and they are great! With that being said, you definitely get what you pay for – they are noticeably less sophisticated than the more expensive versions that I’ve seen, and certainly less authentic looking than my orchid arrangement from Neimans. But! for under $150, I am happy for the purpose they serve, especially since they are in areas of the house that so few people see!

The Botanical Mix {@thebotanicalmix} – from a reader

Urban Manor {@theurbanmanor}

Urban Spikes {@urbanspikes} – Succulent heaven! I’m dying for one of these for my dinning room. I have reached out and will let y’all know what they say!

Well, that’s it! Let me know if you have any favorites that I’m missing, and feel free to have any experiences with faux florals if you have them 🙂

Also, don’t forget that you can donate to the Hurricane Harvey fund here. Any amount counts! Sending lots of love & prayers to all in Houston and Southern Texas.

The Perfect Dress

Dress: Hatch Slouch Dress {also here}// Shoes: Club Monaco {flat version here} // Bag: Kayu // Necklace: Adina Reyter

Y’all. First and foremost, I just want to start this post off by saying my heart is so heavy watching the death & destruction that Hurricane Harvey has caused in South Texas. Having lived through Hurricane Katrina in 2005, I know full well how scary & unpredictable a hurricane {& it’s aftermath} can be, & it is so frustrating to watch and feel utterly powerless to help. If you are reading this, and you are from Houston, or have friends or family that are, my thoughts & prayers are with you. Please stay warm, stay dry, and most importantly, stay safe. If you would like to donate to The Red Cross, you can do so here.

On a different notes, this white dress, a purchase from earlier this summer, has been one of my favorite purchases of the summer. It is by HATCH, a brand designed for pregnant women {yes, I’m serious, & no, I’m not pregnant!} My favorite part about this line is that the items are all transitional – you can wear these pieces both while your pregnant and afterwards! Or, if you’re like me, before 🙂

I love the slouchy, yet elegant, structure of the dress. It was perfect with simple jewelry and these beautiful scalloped sandals. I also love the flat version {on sale!} To see more from HATCH click here – I’m already eyeing this dress, and this striped top for fall – both would be such great versatile pieces! Get all the details above or below, and please, keep Houston in your prayers! x
