Being Bridget

June 17, 2016

Neons // Fitness Friday

For those of you who don’t know {which is probably most of you!} I started working out with a trainer {2x a wk} last September. I have always been naturally thin, but I was feeling lethargic and sluggish – and I wanted to do something that gave me lasting all-day energy. My good friend Kiersten {an incredibly sweet + beautiful model here in Dallas} knew I was looking for someone who would understand my body type, and help me tone without bulking up or loosing weight. Enter John Benton – a Dallas based trainer who specializes in training models who need to stay in shape for their day job. Although I am far from a model, John immediately understood my goals, and created low cardio, high rep workouts that work. 10 months later, I can’t tell you how happy I am!

I wanted to share a few of the exercises John has taught me that I can do on my own – and without any equipment! In the series below, I used a park bench, but you could easily use things around the house like the side of a bed, or a chair.

I always stretch before working out – I’m too afraid I’ll pull a muscle or tear something if I don’t! I usually just do a few basic ones -across the body and pull, arms over the head and pull, and then a leg stretch – sitting down & touching the toes!

Next, I warm up with a light 5 minute jog before I start training to get my heart rate going. {If you’re inside – feel free to jog in place! We do this all the time}

being-bridget-victorias-secret-8336

First up, is the step up! You start with both feet on the ground, and then step up onto the higher surface, pulling your knee as high as it will go. Keep your butt clenched, and lower yourself back onto the ground in a controlled movement. Do 3 sets of 20 on each leg, interchanging as you go.
being-bridget-victorias-secret-8309being-bridget-victorias-secret-8312being-bridget-victorias-secret-8298   This ones pretty self-explanatory! The tricep dip! You start with your arms at a right angle behind you and lower yourself towards the ground. Do 3 sets of 30!being-bridget-victorias-secret-8223

The open arm push up is basically a push up – but you add in a stomach twist! This really helps tighten your abs while also working your arms! You open with your body lowered against the bench, and while pushing yourself up, you open your arm up towards the sky. Don’t forget to keep your abs tight – do 3 sets of 30!

Three easy workouts that you can do from anywhere! I do these all the time when I’m traveling and don’t have time to hit an actual gym. I can do all of these without ever having to leave the hotel room #mykindaworkout

Had to give y’all a detail shot of this super cute sports bra – I’m in love with the neon colors! Comes in 12 other patterns and designs – I’m so tempted by the turquoise/blue one….being-bridget-victorias-secret-8279being-bridget-victorias-secret-8153

Favorite Cookbooks // Alice

Screen Shot 2016-06-16 at 11.54.09 AM

my bookshelf at home!

I have a thing for cookbooks. It is a real treat for me to be able to spend time reading a new (or borrowed) cookbook. Once for my birthday, my husband gave me an entire Sunday afternoon to spend as I pleased (i.e. not on mom duty).  I had just received Jerusalem by Yotam Ottolenghi for Christmas, so I spent my free afternoon planning, shopping for, and executing a meal from that cookbook (the sunchoke chicken, the couscous with tomato paste, and the fried onions in case you were curious).  My family room shelves are almost exclusively cookbooks!  The only books I check out of the library for myself are cookbooks. Given that many cookbooks have cycled in and out over the years, I thought I’d share a few of my enduring favorites.

It’s All Good by Gwyneth Paltrow

I really didn’t set out to love this book, but after making dozens of the recipes, it really is one of the best cookbooks for my family.  We have made so many of the recipes and they turn out great!  Our favorite recipes:

  • Salt Baked Fish – always a huge hit!  We’ve made this several times.  SO fun to do with others.
  • Sriracha Salmon – I even made the homemade sriracha – it was incredible! (although my hands and lips burned for a few days making the homemade sriracha, I now just buy it).
  • The salad dressings are all incredible – the carrot ginger and the dressing for the mango avocado salad are my favorites
  • Black bean and sweet potato chili is amazing.

The Joy of Cooking by Irma Rombauer

This cookbook is one of those classic cookbooks that you can always turn to when you need to review technique, or find a really basic delicious, well tested recipe.  I always turn to it to find a good basic recipe that I can then doctor up as I see fit.  Things I like:

  • Classic cheese quiche (I then change is up and add lots of things)
  • Basic techniques regarding pie crust

Joy the Baker – the food blog run by Joy Wilson

Joy is my go-to source for amazing sweets and desserts.  She and I must be taste bud twins, because everything is always amazing! I

  • Every marshmallow recipe she’s written (honey vanilla, gingerbread, mint chocolate chip – in her first cookbook).  For a few years now I give all the kid’s teachers homemade marshmallows and hot chocolate for their holiday gifts.
  • Strawberry cookies and cream cake (the cake base is vegan!) and it was SO good
  • Vegan chocolate cake – seriously SO good!  I don’t make the green frosting, I just use regular chocolate frosting.  The cake itself is so delicious!
  • Chocolate orange cream cheese pound cake – it is SO good!  I used to make this for my friends who had just had babies.  It was perfect when you needed a little snack at 2am after feeding or rocking a sleeping baby – so easy to just cut yourself a little slice on the way back to bed.
  • Chicken pot pie with cream cheese and chive biscuits – I made this for my son’s second birthday party (fall birthday) and it was a huge hit.  I’ve since made it many times.  Chicken pot pie from scratch without using a canned soup is such a treat.

This book is a New Orleans classic.  We get our gumbo recipe from here.

My New Orleans by John Besh

Everything we’ve made from this book we’ve loved.  The caveat is that it is often time consuming AND not low cal in the least.  However, on special occasions, it is a go to source of inspiration.

  • Our method for a quick roux comes from this book
  • The Spinach Madeleine
  • Jambalaya

Barefoot Contessa books – Ina Garten

I must confess that I have all of her books!  I’m a big Ina fan.  There are several favorite recipes:

  •  I make this asian salmon once a week in the oven (rather than the grill) and the kids LOVE it!
  •  40 clove chicken – perfect for the garlic lovers in Northern Cali
  • Lentil sausage soup – the kids love this (and so do the adults)

Weelicious by Catherine McCord

I first discovered this blog a few years ago when my first was still a baby.  The meals are perfect for that in between phase where you need food that appeals to both babies and adults, but don’t want to make multiple meals. My kids love the cottage cheese pancakes (protein packed!) and the spinach ricotta bites (we always double the recipe and freeze).

I just bought the new Mark Bittman book Kitchen Matrix and the new Gwyneth Paltro book It’s All Easy.  I can’t wait to cook my way through these books!  If I’m missing any favorites, please let me know!

Wedding Tradtions

Screen Shot 2016-06-15 at 1.32.51 PM

I’ve always loved {and been fascinated by} traditions. Growing up in New Orleans, we were always surrounded by them. Whether it was the way we pronounce certain words or the way we all grew up knowing that you eat red beans & rice on Mondays – there is something so special about long standing traditions.  So when my mom recently sent me a tear out from Real Simple about Wedding Traditions, I knew I had to share it with you all.

I couldn’t find the actual snippet online, so I’ve transcribed it below!

WEDDING TRADITIONS

Fathers used to give away the bride — literally — in exchange for something else. What else set the stage for old, new, borrowed, and blue? Walk with us down the aisle of history and find out!

13th Century

The Catholic Church declares that a wedding must be officiated by a priest. Before this, marriage was often a contractual agreement between the groom and the bride’s father and usually included the exchange of land or money.

phew! so glad we’ve come away from this!

14th – 15th Centuries

In England, weddings are more rowdy than romantic, says Stephanie Coontz, Ph.D., the author of Marriage, a History. Guests tear at the bride’s dress, since snagging a scrap is considered good luck. Eventually, to keep the gown intact, a new ritual is born: The bride throws her bouquet from a distance, while the groom tosses her garter.

1840

White gowns are a must have after Britain’s Queen Victoria wears one to wed Prince Albert. Previously, royalty donned garments of ermine, purple velvet, and gold thread. In india, white is the color of mourning, which makes wearing it a no-no for brides.

1858

Brides get their theme music. Like her mom with the radical white gown 18 years before, Princess Victoria Starts a super-trend when she walks down the aisle after her nuptials to Felix Mendelssohn’s “Wedding March.”

1933

Thanks to its same-day wedding-license policy, Las Vegas becomes “the Marriage Capital of the World” when Reverend J.D. Foster opens a chapel for lovebirds to elope.

Late 1930s to 1940s

Women are the only ones putting a ring on it until World Ward II, when soldiers fighting overseas starts wearing wedding bands as loving reminders of the wives they left behind. For centuries, it was believed that the vena amoris (vein of love), in the fourth finger of the left hand, lead directly to the heart.

Not going to lie…..I believed that about the vena amoris until right this moment!

1980s

Inspired by the lavish wedding of Diana, Princess of Wales, many start thinking bigger for their own nuptials. Bridal magazines and wedding marketers help sell the princess-for-a-day fantasy, and the industry swells to epic proportions in the 2000s.

2009 to 2010

Social media ushers in a new way to share the love, including choreographed dances broadcast on YouTube, Pinterest boards on everything from flowers to favors, and photos posted on Instagram and Facebook in the moment. These days, 50% of couples create personalized hashtags for weddings.

I can’t imagine a wedding these days without a hashtag – it’s the best way to share and see photos from start to finish!

2016

The Latest tradition seems to be bucking tradition. WeddingWire’s recent survey notes that 26% of couples have mixed gender wedding parties (as in “groom ladies” and “bridesmen”), and 37% opt to be married by a friend rather than a religious officiant.

Above article quoted from Real Simple, June 2016 Issue

I knew I wanted to incorporate a few traditions into our wedding, and without giving too much away – I’ve numbered off a few of my favorite New Orleans wedding traditions below.

The Second Line

The Cake Pulls

Linen, seersucker or any light colored suit for the grooms party

A More Silly Grooms cake

Burying the Bourbon

I hope you all have a wonderful Wednesday, and I can’t wait to show you guys more! xx
